Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are a group of Caribbean islands and islets. Quelbe, a style of folk music that originated in the Virgin Islands, developed as a way for islanders to preserve their rich storytelling traditions. In 2003, the U.S. Virgin Islands legislature passed a bill making Quelbe the official music of the Islands. The classic songs such as “Queen Mary” and “LaBega Carousel” tell of historical events on the island of St. Croix, while other pieces accompany the local traditions of quadrille dance.
